Band Camp F.A.Q. |
|
Why do we go to band camp?
The reason we go to band camp is to give us a chance to learn our new marching band show for the year while at the same time build friendships and work together as a group.
What kind of things should I bring?
You bring the same things to band camp that you would bring on a week long vacation. Remember not to forget your instrument! You must also bring your polo shirt, hat and white pants. These are needed for the performance given on the last day showing the parents what we accomplished over the week.
How long is band camp?
Band camp is two weeks long. During pre-camp, we work on basic marching skills rehearse the marching band music.
Pre-camp is held at Dakota High School from July 27 -
July 31 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The second week, we go to Central Michigan University to work on learning our half-time show drill. This year, we will be at
CMU from August 2 – August 7.
What are the section leaders?
Section leaders are meant to help keep your particular section in order. There are usually 1 or 2 section leaders per instrument section. They make sure you are marching properly, marching in formation, playing your music accurately, and that you are not causing any disturbances. This makes it easier for the director to focus on the band as a whole instead of having to focus on individual sections.
Do I really have to memorize my music?!
Yes. This may sound like a lot to ask, but it's not. Think about it. You are playing it so much that you will end up memorizing it anyway. By memorizing all your music, you no longer have to focus on what you are playing and you can focus on your marching instead.
Wow... band camp is REALLY expensive...
Yes... it is. But the money goes towards band camp, purchasing music, hiring instructors, transportation costs, a t-shirt, and dry cleaning the uniform. If you cannot afford it, talk with Ms. Hsu to work out a payment plan.
